Spectator venues and how to watch the race.
Eight top pilots from around the world will participate in the event.
A fusion of real and digital creates the world's first urban XR Sports. The innovation of sports entertainment is here!
Air Race, which has excited the world, is back as “AIR RACE X,” the world’s first urban XR sport. The Digital Round, Final Tournament will be held on October 15, 2023 (Sunday) in Shibuya.
What is Urban XR Sports?
AIR RACE X is a new sports competition that uses XR (AR = Augmented Reality, MR = Mixed Reality, and VR = Virtual Reality) in real urban spaces. For AIR RACE X competition, XR technology is used to expand the possibilities of urban use by transforming Shibuya and other urban spaces around the world where flying is impossible into race venues. This will create the foundation for new sports competitions and provide the excitement generated by an unprecedented experience.
The racetrack in Shibuya, Tokyo, where aircraft will race at speeds of up to 400 km/h, will be open to the public day for the Digital Round, Final Tournament in Shibuya on October 15 (Sunday). We will also inform you of viewing areas and how to watch the race.
Eight top pilots from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Japan, South Africa, and Spain, have been selected to participate in AIR RACE X.
The world’s first AIR RACE X race is about to start and will be viewed using state-of-the-art digital technology.
Impossible in real life, the city of Shibuya becomes a racetrack.
If we were to fly actual race planes over Shibuya, what kind of course design would allow us to weave through the high-rise buildings and create a spectacular race for the spectators? The racetrack was meticulously created on the assumption that it was real, considering the topography of Shibuya.
Each pilot flies based on the Shibuya course design at bases around the world. The flight data acquired during these flights is converted into images using XR technology. The system allows users to watch the competition as if they were flying on a smartphone or tablet with the real metaverse platform “STYLY” installed, or on a head-mounted display.
The final tournament of the Shibuya Digital Round on October 15 (Sunday) will start competition at 16:00. On the day of the competition, in addition to the official spectator sites, the races can be watched from anywhere in Shibuya if the racetrack is within view. The event is also full of devices that were not possible in previous air races, such as two or more race planes flying at the same time, and lap times and penalties being displayed in space. The near-future world that looks like something you would see in a science fiction movie is now a reality thanks to XR technology.
The AIR RACE X Shibuya Digital Round will consist of six days of qualifying rounds starting on October 8, and the winner will be decided at the finals on Sunday, October 15. During the qualifying rounds, the results of the daily round-robin races will be shown on the official AIR RACE X website. On the day of the finals, you will be able to watch the AR races in Shibuya and on the official AIR RACE X YouTube channel for a worldwide broadcast of the races.
An AIR RACE X special program, a complete 45-minute package of this competition, will be distributed worldwide in late October.

What is Air Racing?
━━━━━━━━━
Air racing is the general term for motorsports in the sky that use aircraft to compete in flight techniques and aircraft performance. There have been many races since the 1930s, including the Reno Air Race and the National Air Race, but the most famous is the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which was held from 2003 to 2019. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship is the ultimate three-dimensional motorsport, in which contestants compete for the fastest time to the finish line by passing a 25-meter-high air-inflated pylon (obstacle) in a prescribed order and method. It consists of a series of grueling aerial time trials with a maximum speed of 370 km/h and a maximum load of 12G and was also known as the “Formula 1 of the sky”.
